Where will the 27 year old blue liner end up?

With big name free agents like John Tavares, Paul Stastny, James van Riemsdyk, Mike Green and Jack Johnson all off the market, the focus of NHL general managers turns to the secondary market and potential value signings for players. In particular, the available defensemen remaining on the market should intrigue more than a few GMs. Blue liners like Calvin de Haan, Brooks Orpik, and Dan Hamhuis are still on the market and available to any interested party.

The 27 year old De Haan is reportedly in discussions with four NHL teams, with his former team the New York Islanders and the Toronto Maple Leafs believed to be the frontrunners:

Ongoing contract talks continue for de Haan with multiple teams, but the field is narrowing. Leafs, Isles remain in mix, told couple other teams too.

Yesterday Brian Lawton of NHL Network identified the Islanders, New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils and Dallas Stars as frontrunners to land de Haan:

Hearing that Calvin de hann has identified 4 clubs that would be excellent organizations to join. A return to NYIslanders or joining NYRangers, Devils, Stars. He is expected to sign a multi year deal today!

Interesting. The 27 year old de Haan is a defensive specialist who put up a goal and 12 points in 33 games for the Islanders last season. His career high of five goals and 25 points in 82 games during the 2016-17 season though indicates that he’s capable of providing a bit of offence

According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the Leafs are considered to be one of the teams “in the mix” to land de Haan, along with the aforementioned Islanders.

Check it out:

The Toronto Maple Leafs have recently expressed serious interest in D Calvin de Haan. The Islanders also still very interested. A few more teams remain in the mix. Offers in the table, and he’s turned down one long-term offer from a team. Talks very much ongoing.

Pagnotta goes on to mention the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils as potential suitors, as well.

There’s no denying that the Leafs could use another capable defender in their top six, especially with shot blocking specialist Roman Polak moving on to sign a deal in free agency with the Dallas Stars.
