Report: Wild trade sets the table for deadline addition

Wait… what’s going on with this team? The Athletic’s Michael Russo breaks it ALL down…

Yesterday’s minor league transaction between the Minnesota Wild and the New Jersey Devils had many Wild fans scratching their heads. “We got who? For who?”

Who are these guys and why were they traded? While Viktor Loov does have some NHL potential, this move was essentially an “addition by subtraction” type move for the Wild. By moving out two contracts and acquiring just one back, the Wild have now afforded themselves some flexibility heading into the NHL’s February 26th trade deadline. Prior to yesterday’s deal the Wild had 50 contracts on the books, the NHL maximum. By shipping out Mario Lucia and Christoph Bertschy in exchange for Loov, the Wild have managed to get themselves down to 49 contracts.

In theory, this means that Wild GM Chuck b could swing another deal prior to the deadline that sees the team bump back up to 50 contracts. What’s more likely to happen though is that the team will sign top prospect Jordan Greenway when his season with the Boston University Terriers concludes.

According to Russo:

Also, the Wild are expected to sign Greenway out of Boston University at some point. The Wild theoretically could sign him after the Olympics later this month, but more than likely, Greenway wouldn’t want to abandon his teammates and it would come after the Terriers’ season ends. The Hockey East tournament starts in early March. NCAA regionals take place March 23-25, but as of now, BU would not make the NCAAs.

Once signed Greenway would be eligible to join the Wild for the Stanley Cup playoffs, should they quality. The 20-year-old former 2nd round pick (50th overall) of the Wild in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft will make his Olympic debut for Team USA in Pyeongchang, South Korea later this week. From the NCAA to the Olympics to the NHL… it could be a whirlwind season for the young power forward.

The 6’5, 230 pound winger has nine goals and 25 points in 28 games with BU this season and is poised to be an absolute force for USA and the Wild in the coming months. Stay tuned, Wild fans.
