The decision that New York Islanders superstar John Tavares will be faced this summer is one of the hottest topics in the National Hockey League, and it may have just gone nuclear.
On Friday TSN insider Bob McKenzie made some shocking comments during a radio interview, suggesting that not only could Tavares potentially leave the team, but that he could leverage his value to bring a second player along with him.
“We joked about Drew Doughty talking about colluding with Erik Karlsson," said McKenzie as per Fanrag's Chris Nichols. "What if John Tavares and his linemate Josh Bailey decided they were going to collude and they were going to say, ‘Hey, how about us as a package deal? We’re both free in the summer here.’
It's hard to imagine a situation right now where a team could afford to bring on both players, but considering the level of talent we are talking about here you just know NHL general managers would find a way to make it work.
Both Tavares and Bailey are currently tied for 2nd in NHL scoring with 45 points each on the season, and Bailey is currently the NHL's assists leader this season.
Needless to say that any team pulling off this move would have to be considering an immediate favorite to win a Stanley Cup Championship.
