In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, the Ottawa Senators traded superstar defenseman Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks for a package deal of picks and prospects.
In case you missed the details, here’s the full deal:
To San Jose Sharks:D Erik Karlsson
F Francis Perron
To Ottawa Senators:F Chris Tierney
D Dylan DeMeloF Rudolfs Balcers
F Josh Norris (rights)2019 2nd RD pick *higher of two SJ own
2020 1st RD pick *conditional2021 2nd RD pick *conditional
Underwhelming? Maybe… while there are no marquee names heading back to Ottawa in the deal, Sens general manager Pierre Dorion did manage to grab six assets in exchange for Karlsson. How those assets turn out remains to be seen, but it’s probably pretty safe to say that Sens fans are NOT happy with the return. When Dorion met with the media to take questions regarding the trade though, Sens fans got even more upset.
During a 15 minute rushed press conference, Dorion cleared looked uncomfortable… maybe he was still in shock from having traded his team’s captain and franchise player? In any case, Dorion did drop one tidbit of information that has Sens fans absolutely raging. Despite both Dorion and owner Eugene Melnyk maintaining all along that Karlsson was NOT being shopped for a trade and that the plan was to sign him to a long term deal, Dorion admitted yesterday that they had made up their mind to trade him prior to last year’s trade deadline. Wait what!? So you were just LYING the whole time? Why!?
Check out this quote from Dorion, courtesy of TSN’s Ian Mendes:
Dorion: “We’ve had this plan in place when I met with Mr. Melnyk in February. Erik Karlsson was probably going to gather the best return in a possible rebuild.”
So… all that talk was just BS then? You lied to your fanbase’s face about one of the most popular players in franchise history? Again… why? Was it to maximize return via trade, because that certainly didn’t seem to go as planned. Did the plan change and then change back again? If so… again why?
So many questions that will be left unanswered as it pertains to Karlsson’s falling out with the Senators. One thing that we guarantee we have an accurate read on though: the Sens will continue to struggle until ownership and management either cleans up their act or is relieved of their duties. Sorry, Sens fans… Mendes himself put it best:
