Some people are pretty good at the whole conspiracy theories, and today, we are thinking we might be part of this group. After looking at what has been taking place in the past week with all of the chatter surrounding Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson, there seems to be something we simply cannot shake off. Here is it:

Many people were caught off guard on Tuesday when the Tampa Bay Lightning announced out of the blue that it had signed their star player Nikita Kucherov to a massive eight-year contract extension. We are not saying the guy doesn't deserve it - simply that while the Bolts have been extremely involved in the Karlsson sweepstakes, no one had heard that general manager Steve Yzerman was ready to finalize a deal with the Russian forward.

While the signing has been quite an exciting news for the club and its fanbase, it revealed one major thing: we appear to know now where the leaks in the Karlsson rumors are coming from - clearly nothing is coming out from the Lightning.

On Thursday night, the confusion of a failed trade attempt between the Senators and Lightning went viral on social media as the deal was never made official. Let's be clear: while the Lightning, Vegas Golden Knights, New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Dallas Stars have all spoken to the Senators about acquiring Karlsson, the star defenseman remains in Ottawa for now.

However, we now wonder if the rumors of a trade close to be completed was leaked by Ottawa in order to get the other suitors to raise their offer and for the Senators to get a better deal. In a recent NHL podcast, it was discussed that "Ottawa is known to be a leaky organization in terms of news."

So what if Sens GM Pierre Dorion decided to spice things up and leaked the ongoing trade chatter he was having with the Lightning? It might have woken up the Stars, who are still reportedly in the running, to part with assets they weren't willing to in the first place in order to win the Karlsson sweepstakes? The Senators have been targeting the Stars top blue line prospect, 2017 third overall pick  Miro Heiskanen, and were told he wasn't up for grabs by Dallas.

However, with this potential plan of leaked rumors and rising prices, Ottawa could end up getting what they want. However, they could get into a lot of trouble... and let's just say they have been under fire quick a bit lately.

For now, Ottawa seems to be holding tight because the return offers are not what they’re hoping for, and if they have to, they might leak some more information to get what they really want.
