The waiting game seems almost over in the Ottawa Senators’ dressing room as more and more reports hint that captain Erik Karlsson will be traded shortly.

Last night, The Fourth Period’s editor in chief David Pagnotta reported that the trade rumors involving Karlsson have reportedly intensified in the last 24 to 36 hours. With training camp just around the corner, Pagnotta believes this time it might actually take place… He added that one team has upped its offer.

Today it was NHL insider Darren Dreger’s turn to reveal that Karlsson is expected to be move in the next few days…

“I can tell you this - everything is pointing to Erik Karlsson being moved by the Ottawa Senators within a day or two. I mean, that’s our sense.”

Now it seems that even the Senators are putting it out there. According to team insider Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, the future of Karlsson definitely remains in limbo following a video and letter from Senators owner Eugene Melnyk indicating the team would undergo a full rebuild without mentioning the team’s captain. Not once…

"But Melnyk made it clear in the video _ which is a first in the history of this organization and it came with the hashtag #OttawaRising _ that general manager Pierre Dorion and his staff are going with a younger roster which means it’s doubtful Karlsson is going to be kept."

Karlsson said he’d speak formally to the media about his future when training camp officially opens later this week, but who knows he might be out of there before he gets the chance to do so…

However, the Senators appear to be looking for a suitor who is looking to take on other contracts in the transaction. It is believed that the Senators are looking for a similar package to what the Montreal Canadiens received for Max Pacioretty – a current NHL player, a top prospect and a high draft pick.

The Vegas Golden Knights remain a strong suitor, despite trading for Pacioretty earlier this week.

It was once believed that the Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks and Knights were among the frontrunners in the Karlsson sweepstakes, and now, we could get a winner real soon.
