The Colorado Avalanche are currently pulling off something no one could have expected: the team currently sits in the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference with 57 points, and could successfully head into the postseason for the first time in five years.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun wrote Monday in The Athletic that the Avalanche have identified a need for a top-nine winger ahead of the trade deadline and general manager Joe Sakic could make a move to improve his roster en route for the playoffs.

The Avalanche enter Tuesday's game against the Vancouver Canucks with already nine more points thus far this year than their dismal 48 points last season.

However, the Avalanche are lucky to be able to make some move at the deadline, and also continue to build the future.

The Avalanche enter the deadline with more than $8 million in cap space and four draft picks in the first two rounds of this year's draft thanks to the Matt Duchene trade.

While they could part with a few elements before the Feb. 26 deadline to immediately boost the offense, Sakic could manage to keep important draft picks to keep building a strong future around captain Nathan MacKinnon

When many fans criticized Sakic's work ahead of the Duchene trade, now, we must admit, it is pretty impressive...
