The news was made official this week: the Vegas Golden Knights signed 27-year-old forward Jonathan Marchessault to a six-year contract extension with an average annual value of $5 million.
That was quite the move for one of the best forwards in the NHL at the moment, on an expansion team on their way to making the postseason in their inaugural season. Impressive.
And now, GM George McPhee is reportedly about to make another big move, as The Knights on Ice mentioned that he could be looking to lock up another important forward in his lineup.
"Center William Karlsson, the third member of the Marchessault-Smith line, will become a restricted free agent this offseason. So if McPhee wants to keep that line together long-term, Karlsson will need to be signed to a contract extension as well.
"Without a doubt, Karlsson will be looking for a deal close to (if not more than) the value of Marchessault’s contract, which is certainly warranted. After all, he leads the Golden Knights with 20 goals through just 38 games and is on pace to shatter all of his previous career highs in every major statistical category."
McPhee is expected to want to keep one of the best lines in the NHL this season together. We will have to stay tuned as it seems that Vegas will be make another big move shortly.
