You can excuse Toronto Maple Leafs fans if they thought that the team’s mini-slump was busted on Tuesday afternoon. After breaking out for an incredible eight goals on the Carolina Hurricanes during a matinee game on the team’s 100th anniversary, the Leafs travelled to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets last night. The effort was… well less than desired.

The Leafs dropped a 4-2 decision to the Blue Jackets and Leafs head coach Mike Babcock made it clear that he wasn’t happy with his team’s compete level. “We didn’t compete,” he said following the disappointing loss. “We had the best back -to-back you can have. We got in here at eight o’clock last night, so no reason for us not to be ready.”

Despite the loss, it wasn’t all bad news for Leafs fans. Sophomore Mitch Marner continued his strong player and scored a beautiful goal to pull the Leafs to within two goals in the 3rd period, but that was really as close as the team got last night. Backup Curtis McElhinney played a strong game, but was under siege for much of the evening, turning aside 33 of 37 shots.
